Curriculum Outline for Mrs. Athearn’s STEM Pathways Class
2015-2016

Trimester 1: Grades 3/4 and 4
  • Engineering Design Process (EDP)
  • Aeronautical Engineering
    • Design a Flying Technology using the EDP
    • Improve a Flying Technology using the EDP
    • Let’s Learn TinkerCad: A web-based 3D modeling tool
    • Create a 3D model of your Flying Technology in TinkerCad (print some in 3D printer)
Trimester 2: Grades 3 and 5
  • Engineering Design Process (Gr. 3 and Gr. 5)
  • Aerospace Engineering (Gr. 5)
    • Rockets and Rovers: Design a rocket with paper materials using the EDP
    • Design and plan a paper rover with criteria and constraints for sending it to a planet or moon using the EDP
    • Learn TinkerCad: Design a rocket with TinkerCad: 3D modeling (print some in 3D printer)
    • Extension activities to include: Designing a rover that can move using Lego Robotics and/or LittleBits; exploring life on the International Space Station
  • Code Studio: Introductory Coding (Gr. 5)
  • Aeronautical Engineering ( Gr. 3)
    • Design a Flying Technology using the EDP
    • Improve a Flying Technology using the EDP
    • Let’s Learn TinkerCad: A web-based 3D modeling tool
    • Create a 3D model of your Flying Technology in TinkerCad (print some in 3D printer)
  • We-Do Lego Robotics (Gr. 3)
Trimester 3: Grades 3, 3/4 and 4
  • Environmental/Green Engineering: Recycled Racers! (Gr. 3, 3/4 , 4)
    • Experiment with two-wheeled systems and see how other wheel materials roll.
    • How can we use recycled materials as parts of toy cars?
    • Create a racer track
    • Create a recycled racer using the EDP
    • Improve a recycled racer using the EDP
  • Code Studio: Introductory coding (Gr. 4 and some 3rds from blended classes)
  • We-Do Lego Robotics (Gr. 3)
  • Possible Extension activities (Gr. 3, 3/4 , 4): researching environmental problems in our local area and using Design Thinking to come up with solutions (still in development); researching how to green our school even more (still in development)
