All About Mrs. Athearn

Hi Friends!

My name is Sarah Athearn, and I am the new STEM teacher at Wentworth Intermediate School in beautiful Scarborough, Maine. I am super excited and proud to call myself a Wentworth Wolf Cub! Before coming to Wentworth, I worked in South Portland as a literacy intervention teacher, and I also led a dynamic group of 4th and 5th graders in the LearningWorks Afterschool program there. LearningWorks is where I developed a deep passion for STEM teaching and learning.

Let me tell you a bit more about myself. I grew up in Westbrook, Maine and graduated from Westbrook High School in 2003. While there, I received the MIT Outstanding Achievement in Science award and participated all four years on the Environthon science team. I guess I always knew I'd end up teaching science! After high school, I attended the University of Southern Maine and graduated in 2008 with a B.A. in Sociology. I began the Extended Teacher Education Program at USM in 2010 and will graduate in May, 2016 with a M.S. Ed. in Teaching and Learning.

I am an eleventh generation "Mainah" with deep family roots in the Maine coast and the Great Maine North Woods. I love to spend summers camping in Baxter State Park or paddling around the numerous beautiful Maine islands. Currently, I live in South Portland with my husband- Michael, our son-George, and our two fur-babies-Nilla the dog and Petie the cat. When I'm not teaching, I love swimming, paddling, hiking, cooking, painting, knitting, and I absolutely love to READ!

Check my blog often for updates on your child's STEM curriculum and projects, cool science websites, and engineering resources. Feel free to leave comments and feedback, or drop me an email at sathearn@scarboroughschools.org.

Happy Engineering!!

Mrs. A :)
